Check your vehicle's gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and choose a lift rated for at least 20% above that — a 3-tonne lift handles most sedans and light SUVs, while 4-5 tonne lifts are better for heavier vehicles and trucks. Going underweight risks instability and safety issues during use.
Symmetric lifts have arms on both sides at equal heights, while asymmetric lifts have one arm higher for better sight lines and undercarriage access. Asymmetric designs cost more but give you better visibility when working, making them worth it if you do detailed undercar work regularly.
Most lifts need 3.5 to 4 metres of ceiling height when fully extended, though compact models go lower. Measure your garage carefully and account for the lift's collapsed height plus extra space for safe operation.
Single-stage lifts are simpler and cheaper but lift slower, while dual-stage lifts raise faster but cost more and need better maintenance. Single-stage works fine for home garages; go dual-stage only if you're lifting cars daily.
You need solid concrete flooring (minimum 10cm thick) and the floor must be level — uneven surfaces cause lift tilt and instability. Many lifts need professional installation, so factor that cost in and check if the seller offers setup or if you need a qualified technician.
